TGIF! I’ve been working hard to get the the local newspaper I told you about ready for print and they were delivered today! It’s such a relief to actually hold them each month. The next month’s issue is—if all goes according to plan—going to be the first with a new redesign and new website, so there’s a lot to do in the next few weeks. At the same time, Skyler’s Birthday party is tomorrow, so we’ve been gearing up for that. We decided to book a venue and order a cake for this one and then the kids and I just finished painting a banner for something homemade to bring along. She invited her entire kindergarten class and I think it made it really nice for her today: she was able to talk about the party openly and lots of the kids yelled “see you tomorrow” at pick-up. She was in heaven! Her actual birthday is next Wednesday. How is my baby six already?

Planning a family road trip for 2020, but not sure how your kids (or you) will survive it? I get it. Especially during those younger years, when they’re trapped in a car seat and crying and you have hundreds of miles to go? Stuff of nightmares, right?
I’ve gotten a lot of questions recently about our New Mexico road trip and I confess, I probably wouldn’t have wanted to log so many hours in the car with a baby. In those cases, you just try to drive when they’re sleeping and, well, I wish you the best! (And no, it’s really not possible to breastfeed them while they’re strapped in. And yes, I’ve tried. In a cab. I don’t recommend it.)
But once they’re able to look out the windows or ask for what they want, there are ways to make the time more enjoyable. Having “survived” (read: mostly loved, sometimes tolerated) quite a few road trips with my own family, I thought I’d share my tips and tricks for keeping everyone happy. And please share yours with me in the comments below, new ideas are always (needed) welcomed.
Confession: Being one of those people who absolutely kill it at karaoke would be one of my most desired talents. It’s so fun to watch someone really go for it—I wish I had the stage-confidence to do the same. When asked, I usually pass the mic.
That’s not to say I haven’t imagined my best songs.
