HITHER & THITHER GIFT GUIDE: FOR HIM

This week will bring gift ideas for her, for the kiddo, and for everyone else. Today, gifts for him…

1. Everything is love. He can share his with these Converse High Tops. (Or, Did you know that you can customize any Converse Icon shoe? Design one that’s right for him.)

2. New York’s Essa Bagel is, sadly, 2,800 miles away from Davis. If your fellow is also missing the taste and chew of real East Coast bagels, there’s good news. Goldbelly will deliver.

3. Ruggedly handsome: a Denim or Corduroy Sherpa jacket. Very A Star is Born.

4. Chic, wide-stripe pajamas. They could read Wes-Anderson-inspired on a younger man or totally classic on a grandpa. Pair with the Sunday crossword. (Update: Similar or Similar)

5. Our friends gave Aron a Yeti Rambler Mug, and it really is a good design: Dishwasher safe, double-walled… “It will keep [his] drinks as cold (or hot) as science allows.”

6. Epicurian Cutting Boards are amazing. We have one in the thin black and it’s awesome because it covers all the bases (it won’t dull your knives; is easy to clean; doesn’t harbor bacteria; is heat-resistant up to 350°F; and is dishwasher safe), but it looks good, too. These handled ones, however, look even better—I want one!

7. He’ll love this DIY Liquor Infuser Set (Also on Food52) for making his own spirits at home. Up the ante by adding more flavors.

8. And then consider a set of classic, cut-glass Whisky Tumblers. (Wirecutter called these a great value.)

9. Show him you understand his love of all things The Office with this Schrute Farms T-shirt.

10. For the music afficianado: A map of the United States of America made up entirely from the titles of over 1,000 songs. (Pssst… There’s an accompanying playlist on Spotify!)

11. The very best (reliably secure) camera strap.

12.He’s trying to ditch the plastic wrap. All the better for the cheese. Help him out with a Cheese Vault. (Also at Amazon, in different colors.)

13. For a nice, classic dress shirt (trusted quality, good value, and wrinkle-free), check out the Nordstrom’s Smartware line. It comes in the updated Trim Fit and traditional.

14. The Nintendo NES Classic will take him back—only its smaller, sleeker, and pre-loaded with 30 games for only $60. (Or, for a bit less nostalgia, consider the new Switch.)

15. Wireless headphones transmitter that will make any jack work with his earbuds. (Or add in the wireless headphones that would best suit him—like noise-cancelling ones.)

16. The support of the original, but more versatile: Waterproof Birkenstocks.

17. If he’s design-minded, he’ll appreciate the beauty of this perfectly designed walnut waste bin.

18. For keeping his valuable close-by on the gym floor: a Bindle Bottle.

19. Codenames was given the #1 ranking for “party game” on Board Game Geek, and is supposed to be fun and engaging.

20. For the perfect cappuccino—or any other drinks that improve with frothed milk, this will make the richest, finest foam.

21. Susan Orlean called The Food Explorer: The True Adventures of the Globe-Trotting Botanist Who Transformed What America Eats “a delicious piece of writing.” If he likes books that spark imagination and hunger, some other suggestions: Buttermilk Graffiti: A Chef’s Journey to Discover America’s New Melting-Pot Cuisinewhich Booklist praises: “At a time when America’s melting-pot culture frightens so many citizens, Lee finds hope and joy in visiting ethnic communities all across the nation’s breadth.” Blood, Bones & Butter: The Inadvertent Education of a Reluctant Chef, which the late Anthony Bourdain called “the best memoir by a chef ever. Ever.” The social history Ten Restaurants That Changed America, according to The New Yorker, “is a book as much about the contradictions and contrasts in this country as it is about its places to eat. It is designed to keep you up, thinking.”

If none of these ideas is just right for him, look to experiences—perhaps a spa day or a concert together. Or a gift card to one of his favorite stores: one for Nordstrom to use at their January men’s half-yearly sale would be nice.

More inspiration…

I’ve been putting together gift guides for many years and I often find myself going back to past guides for gift-giving inspiration even now. Just in case you’d like to do the same, check out these previous Gift Guides for Him.
