It’s always a good sign when you get something new in the mail and you want to rip off the tags and wear it immediately. Still, I’m never completely certain what’s going to become that item I reach for over and over again until I’ve had it for a while. Last year it turned out to be a slightly boxy white blouse. It would barely make it into the wash before I’d be rifling around to find it.
The truth is: I almost always prefer simple classics (white, denim, stripes, and such) but I still want the thrill of something new when the seasons change—and when the new catalogues arrive to tempt. It seems the safest bet is to acknowledge this and to look for new takes on those tried-and-true favorites.
Boden reached out with their new lookbook for spring and there’s so much good stuff. (Warning: it will make you want to go on vacation somewhere sunny.) I usually order the kids’ swimsuits and rashguards from them around now; this time I added some items for myself to the cart…

I also tried out a new swimsuit (their Sorrento remains one of my all-time favorite one-pieces), a ruched dress (curve-hugging if you’re body conscious, but flattering like their swimsuits), and a pair of red heels (I loved the black ones over the holidays, and these are a little lower).
The pocket sweater has a relaxed fit, but manages to still feel flattering (and it has just a bit of cashmere, so it’s very soft). And I think these dress pants might become a staple. What do you think of the leapord print flats? I like the pointy toes on this style for wearing with skinny jeans.
The Eton Cropped pants are a denim trend I’ve been curious to try out, in case I feel like breaking out of the skinny ankle style once in a while. What do you think? And then there’s the jumpsuit—I had a hard time choosing between the black and brown ankle boots. (The silver-and-gold slingbacks and cross-body purse are my own, but these shoes and this bag have similar looks.)
Like I said, I promptly wore the denim jumpsuit out the night it arrived—to a dinner date in Oakland that included a visit to Temescal Alley. I wonder which of these items is destined to become “that” piece this spring. Any idea what will be yours?
