The Weekly Digest

It’s Friday and we’re looking forward to one of the last pre-holiday season weekends! We have a 40th birthday party to attend on Saturday night (and a dinner date beforehand), that I’m looking forward to, and then Aron—amazing fellow that he is—is going to run his first Spartan race on Sunday. So we’re looking forward to cheering him on!

Hope you have a great weekend! Some links of note…

We went to hear Jodi Kantor talk at UC Davis a few months ago and her lecture on investigative journalism and breaking the Harvey Weinstein story was incredibly compelling.  The Goop podcast was also wonderful–and especially interesting considering Gwyneth’s part in women coming forward. I’m really looking forward to reading Kantor’s co-authored book, She Said.

Watched all of Jack Ryan last week and was disappointed. This review resonated.

A striking essay on the hard truths of parenting—motherhood in particular.

In northern Norway, “people view winter as something to be enjoyed, not something to be endured,” says Leibowitz, and that makes all the difference.

Kneecapped.”

It’s no surprise to me that this Tom Hanks article is the most-read story in The New York Times right now. It’s nice to read something that makes you smile. Plus, it has this most beautiful advice on parenting: “Somewhere along the line, I figured out, the only thing really, I think, eventually a parent can do is say I love you, there’s nothing you can do wrong, you cannot hurt my feelings, I hope you will forgive me on occasion, and what do you need me to do?”

“We are here. Alex is here. We are all of us together, in our way, and what can we do but be thankful for it?” How Jeopardy can mean home in our lives.

What a joyous clip! (I wish we’d gotten video of our wedding reception.)

Forced to chop down a 110-year-old tree, she turned it into something beautiful.

Have you noticed? The Instagram like-count is gone! (Or am I just one of the test-audience?)

L.L. Bean is 25% off through Tuesday. I did a blog post with them a few years back (look at those babies!), and the clothes I chose in that collaboration are still some of my most-used winter items (like this). Such a great company.

This blew my mind. (Even as, in seeming contradiction, it doesn’t surprise me.)
