There was so much to celebrate this weekend, I’m just downloading photos and playing catch up today. Though still ridiculously long (surprise!), here are some highlights…

1

Hudson and I had a couple of hours without the baby on Friday afternoon, so we took out the bike to swing by Whole Earth Festival on the UC Davis quad and to eat cupcakes together across from Central Park.

Blackberry season is beginning in my mother-in-law’s garden! We started celebrating mother’s day early with dinner, cake, and a sampling. (Check out their incredible, fragrant cacti blooms!)

Aron and I often celebrate our anniversary on the day (second Saturday in May) rather than the date (May 12th). This year, Aron’s parents had Hudson to their house to play and we had a babysitter stay with Skyler while we drove into Napa Valley for lunch at Redd in Yountville.

Oysters, cocktails, and raw fish made it feel especially decadent—having just been pregnant (and having been pregnant the last time we ate there).

When we met back up with the kids, we all went to the Arboretum to say hello to horses, check-out spring blooms, and take a few family photos—though we didn’t take our own advice. (Hudson looks so much older than he did last year!)

I got kisses all over and felt so lucky. (That high was, predictably, followed by a giant toddler meltdown in the car. But gotta love those highs.)

Aron tried to let me sleep in on Mother’s Day while he and Hudson made breakfast, but I didn’t mind when Hudson was too excited to wake me up and drink orange juice.

We drove back into wine country—this time to Sonoma—and walked around the very charming main square before picnic’ing at Scribe Winery.

It’s always stunning there, and we usually get to hang out with friends. Hudson got pretty tired though (we were on the edge of nap time)—which, in young kids, tends to mean non-stop wiggling and acting a little wily. Why is that?

It was still lovely, but within an hour, I’d fallen on the steep slope and skinned my ankle; Hudson had pulled his diaper out through the leg of his overalls and then asked (pointing to the picnic blanket) “I go under there and go poop?”; and Aron had bounced off at least an extra 200 calories putting Skyler to sleep in the carrier. We got back in the car, sang Hudson his bedtime-cue-song, and he fell immediately to sleep (and stayed so when we got home).

So we got to have some tummy time with this cutie, and finish our picnic there.

That night, my parents came over and we wished my dad a happy birthday, my mom and happy mother’s day! (Before sitting down for Game of Thrones.)

Finally, for our anniversary yesterday, Aron went into work late and we ordered three breakfasts to share between the two of us. Not bad, not bad.

A very happy, very full weekend and a lovely start to our eighth (but really our 15th!) year together.

P.S. Our loose interpretation of the first anniversary gift (paper) for one another.
