Foraging

After brunch at Vandaag on Sunday, we continued on with a Nordic theme and walked out to the New Amsterdam market on the East River. There was the usual wonderful produce and produced goods, but this weekend’s market featured some gorgeous wild mushrooms at a new booth, staffed by the Wild Food Gatherers Guild of Fairlee, Vermont. By the time we arrived, many varieties had already sold out, but what we saw was stunning.
Apparently it has been a great year for mushrooms, what with all the rain, and foragers are finding a wider variety, all at larger sizes than usual. If you’re in town, the booth will be back at the market for two more weeks.
(Some more photos from the New Amsterdam market. And here. And here.)
