Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween! The kids are at school and I’m putting the finishing touches on my costume. We’ll all head downtown this afternoon to visit the Davis Treat Trail—the local shops hand out candy and the neighborhood theatre shows It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown on repeat—before going to a friends’ house for an annual get together and more trick-or-treating. I’ll share some photos tomorrow.

Here’s a quick last minute crudité platter idea if you’re tasked with bringing something to a potluck tonight: radish eyeballs! I used my zester to make the lines and then cut the bottom side of each radish flat to sit on a plate. You could also use a vegetable peeler or a paring knife, but this tool is easiest. Next, I took a toothpick and dipped it in a bit of blue food coloring before puncturing each eyeball. You could also stuff the radishes with olives, but that takes a bit more time. It’s a quick way to dress up one of those grab-and-go crudité mixes you’ll likely find in your local market. So simple!

Have a great evening!

P.S. More last-minute inspiration.

What do you do with the Halloween Candy?

What do you do with all that candy that comes home on Halloween?

We haven’t really set any rules so far. Hudson has been almost as interested in the collecting as the eating, and rips through a just handful before bed. To my complete shock, he has practically forgotten about it by the next day. (I doubt this will be the case this year, but fingers crossed.) Meanwhile, it’s me who has the problem with all that temptation in the cupboards. Which begs the ancillary question: do you eat your kids’ candy?

Do tell! I always find it so interesting to hear everyone’s different practices when it comes to this…

Smashed Pavlova (& Friday Links)

I’ve had this dessert open in a tab on my computer for over a week now. It’s so beautiful. And I really love the way the crunch of a light meringue dessert pairs with cream. It also struck me, looking at it again today, that the berry sauce could be used for a chilling Halloween-themed dessert. Add some candy eyeballs in place of the greens or stick in some other thematic decorations. Or change the sauce. Pavlova is so adaptable.

I’m having a hard time believing that Halloween is almost here. We’ve got some last-minute costume finishing to do this weekend. But we also will be wrapping up soccer season with Hudson’s team, wishing preschool-friends a happy birthday at a pumpkin patch, and I’ll be remembering how to play Clue tonight. And then it’s Thanksgiving…what, tomorrow?

Here are some links of note to get it started…
