Weekend Plans (& Friday Links)

We’d made plans to do a house swap—our cabin for a weekend in San Francisco—but alas, we’ve decided to stay put: our driveway concrete is being poured, and after a rough go on our bathroom remodel, we thought it wise to stick around.

Still, this change of season always gets me excited about making travel plans. Next weekend, we are going to try camping in Big Sur for the first time! I pulled out this guide to camp cooking and I’m using the Camp book from Sunset Magazine to help me with checklists. In terms of clothes, I was looking back at this “Packing List for Yosemite Valley” post—most of this is still my default weekend-in-the-woods wear. Actually, it’s probably for the best that we stay put this weekend—there’s a lot to figure out!

Have you been camping in Big Sur with kids? We haven’t been since the Highway reopened. Any tips?

In the meantime, some links of note…

Local Daytrip: Apple Hill

The collection of apple orchards in the western Sierra Foothills of El Dorado County, known as Apple Hill, is mobbed on weekends throughout the month of October. Traffic grinds to a halt. So every year, Aron takes a half-day off so that we can visit Apple Hill without the crush of fall crowds.

A couple of years back, Heather Palmer wrote a Guide to Apple Hill for us with all of her favorite stops. We’ve used that list to come up with our itinerary ever since.

Relaxed Denim

best denim madewell dad style

I’ve definitely been into the boxier cuts of denim lately, and I know I’m not the only one.

The trick is finding that pair that hugs the right places and stays loose in the other ones. For pants, that usually means a little squeeze at the waist or the butt, and for jackets, you usually want it to still be tailored around the shoulders and under the arms. But obviously, in this world of step-hems and frayed knees, anything goes… Just, relax.
