Elevation of the Dip Cone

I’m a little late to the party, but I’m still plenty excited about my new “discovery”: Big Gay Ice Cream. Between 1st and A on 7th street (like so many wonderful things), the shop is the result of a food truck success. Per their website: “Big Gay Ice Cream began as the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck, a summer experiment by founders Douglas Quint and Bryan Petroff that began rolling the streets of New York City in June 2009.”

I recall hearing the buzz about their concoctions, like the “Salty Pimp” or the “Bea Arthur,” and their creative list of toppings (wasabi, nutella, trix, sea salt and so on), but somehow I just never got around to sampling.

But I’ve been having a waxy chocolate Magic Shell moment lately (I like to let it pool and harden extra thick around chocolate peanut butter ice cream) and it spurred me on to finally see what all the fuss was about. I got the salty pimp: vanilla soft serve topped with dulce de leche sauce and sea salt, dipped in a chocolate shell. And there’s even extra sauce in the cone so that the last bite is special. Aron had “American Globs” with pretzels. They’re twice as expensive as a Mister Softee Dip Cone, but put it to shame. To shame.

I hate carrying around punch cards, but I grabbed one. I can’t stop thinking about that cone, so I have a feeling it won’t sit idle.
