Despite passing on lunch at Peter Luger, the Labor Day holiday began sensationally. It was like, “Luger, who?” In truth, we did still feel the need to get a burger at some point, so we ended the evening at Five Points, where we shared the burger, a plate of scallops and corn, and the stuffed zucchini flowers. I’m sorry to have to report, though, that the burger was a complete disappointment. Five Points is an incredible restaurant—another one with a fantastically seasonal menu—but its burger deserves a pass. Actually, at $17, I’m a bit relieved to say it deserves a pass. We also shared a saffron pistachio custard at Shake Shack on the way to the Met—delicious—so no dessert at Five Points.
Of course no meal could best the experience of walking out to find Roxy Paine’s all-encompassing Maelstrom on the roof of the Met—a network of steel limbs and roots that one can immerse oneself in—overlooking the park and all of its soaring edges, on a warm night. The museum stays open until 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays and the roof garden will stay open through November this year.
