Leek & Mushroom Tart with Salt-and-Pepper crust

I’m excited to share that I contributed to Manhattan magazine’s December issue! You’ll find one of Aron and my favorite recipes–leeks and mushrooms and Gruyere, in a salt-and-pepper pastry crust–on page 126. (Check it out in their digital edition, here.) Buy high-quality, aged cheese, and you’ll love it! One year, we made an extra crust and Aron filled it with cherries and almonds for dessert. The pepper added something special to the sweet. Just another reason you should try making this.

A few links I’ve had starred for a while in my reader, and wanted to share:
A handmade holiday market
I want this mix tape
A reason to buy Ritz Crackers this week
These Finnish textiles are lovely
Chocolat Chaud (I wish all hot cocoa came like this)
A beautiful topographical map
Mossiere necklaces
I love dressing Hudson in stars. He’d look very handsome in this onesie.
Such a nice roundup of childrens’ books for under the tree
I’d like the arrow tea towel from our newest sponsor’s site
Have you seen these sweet holiday wreaths?
It was so nice reading about what everyone is thankful for last week. It helped me remember to be thankful, too.

Have a great weekend!
And congratulations to Courtney who is the second winner of a Pinhole Press gift certificate!

Ben or Noel?

Before there were Edward and Jacob, there were Ben and Noel. In my super-unscientific twitter/Facebook/instagram study, I have observed that a large sample of us are rewatching Felicity reruns on Netflix right now (a finding supported by this recent “Nostalgia Fact-Check” on NY mag).

I’m not sure what my hypothesis is about this yet, but I think it’s pretty interesting the way that Netflix instant almost functions like a tv channel we’re all tuning into simultaneously to revisit people from our pasts—like Jordan Catalano, Winnie Cooper, or Ben Covington.

Raise your hand if you’re cringing once again as Felicity tells Ben that she followed him to University of New York and then… Gasp… cuts her hair.

By the way, when I watched this over 10 years ago (louder gasp—but note the lack of Internet and use of cassettes on the show and it’s hard to believe it was only ten), I was all for Noel. Now I think I’d be “team Ben.” Do you think team Jacob will one day switch allegiance? All the little girls seem to like Jacob best, right?

Hudson’s first Christmas present

We made Hudson a photo album for Christmas, and it just arrived! I’m so over-the-moon with how it turned out and can’t stop flipping through it. I can’t wait to look through it together, with him on my lap, and tell him stories about all the people inside who love him.

We ordered it from Pinhole Press (the wonderful stationary line from whom we ordered our announcements, and one of our sponsors), their “Names and Faces” book, and it feels and looks wonderful. They are sharing gift ideas on their site as part of their “12 days of giving” and our book is featured in their idea gallery! You can see more images from Hudson’s present there (a safe gift to share pre-Christmas, as I’m confident he won’t look). Also, those who comment on each of the 12 days has a chance to win a gift certificate that day! (And though our idea posted yesterday, they let me know that you can still comment there and a second $50 winner will be announced here Friday.)

We’re also getting our Christmas cards from Pinhole Press (on my to-do list), but I think those will have to stay a surprise so that they’re a special delivery for our family. It will be our first time getting photo cards for the holiday, but I figure a new baby gives us license–right? Do you send out holiday cards?
