We’re finally getting our first tastes of those cool fall nights around here. I’ve been pulling on a sweater (from that fall wish list) most mornings, even if the temperature swings in the other direction for midday. October is all about transition.
Some of the leaves are starting to drop and a visit to Apple Hill is on the horizon. We have plans to go camping—glamping, rather, a first—tonight in Guerneville, and then we’ll be back in time for the annual Hoes Down Harvest Festival in the Capay Valley on Saturday. It will be a full weekend! Any fun plans on the horizon?
There’s an old D.H. Lawrence quote that often pops up in articles about empowering children that goes, “How to begin to educate a child: First rule: leave him alone. Second rule: leave him alone. Third rule: leave him alone.”
Indeed whenever I read the advice that children need more independence and control over their own time and behavior, I find myself nodding along, looking at our day for ways to give mine more.
Hudson is eight and in third grade, so the questions tend to be slightly more relevant (but also more high-stakes) with him. For example, is he ready to bike home by himself? In talking about the route with other parents, the general perspective tends to be “I trust my child, but I don’t trust the drivers.” Even just staying to play freely after-school feels like a fraught milestone.
Josh Cole, BBC Head of Comedy, uploaded this photo of Phoebe Waller-Bridge after she won all the Emmy’s, with the caption “all hail the queen.” And while smoking is still the worst, I’m joining the masses to say—I love it. What a moment! It of course reminds one (and was inspired by) Terry O’Neill’s iconic Faye Dunaway “Oscar Ennui“—only that one is the morning after.
I, too, might have raised a glass or two with a nod to this week’s other big news—high crimes and misdemeanors (let’s call it accountability?)—but that, too, has also carries a risk of hangover ennui (and concern), doesn’t it? Who knows what’s in store for us all?
Any fun plans for the weekend? Saturday is the Village Feast in Davis—a Grand Aïoli-style fundraiser lunch to benefit our farm-to-school programs. It’s also a soccer day and a friend’s 40th birthday celebration, so no doubt Sunday will be slower.
