I’ve been getting to know a lot of talented people in Sacramento lately, mostly thanks to Instagram. That’s how I met Bella, who made this mouth-watering Grape Galette. We were both at the Sacramento Tomato Festival and realized we’d taken nearly identical photos of one particularly beautiful display of figs and tomatoes.
I started following her, looking forward to seeing what she was cooking up herself.
Bella writes Ful-filled and, you’ll notice, she’s passionate about local, seasonal, whole foods, and recipes that tell a story. And so I reached out to see if she’d be willing to create some recipes for Hither & Thither. I’m so happy that she agreed!
For the next month, leading up to Thanksgiving, look out for original, seasonal recipes from Bella’s kitchen each week. And in the meantime, check out Ful-Filled to learn how to make this gorgeous Halva and Grape Galette.
What are some of your favorite sources for recipe inspiration (or simply inspiring food photos)?
Aron had a conference in Las Vegas a couple of weeks ago, and so we were thrilled when his parents offered to watch the kids while I flew out to join him. Despite some family-friendly attractions, Vegas is still really best for adults—perfect for a kidless getaway.
I’m definitely not the one to ask for a true “sin-city” tour: Neither of us are too tempted by gambling (truth be told, we didn’t do any while in town), and hanging out together (and sleeping in!) held more appeal than clubbing, but this is my second visit to Vegas this year and I keep discovering new reasons to return.
We’re not quite to sweater-weather here yet, but rumor has it that turtlenecks are back this year, which always used to make me think of this fantastic photo of—do you recognize her? Guess who. (Answer at bottom.) Now it’s a toss between the late Nora Ephon (who would wear the staple to hide her age… or at least her aging neck) and Diane Keaton (in Nancy Meyer’s Something’s Gotta Give).
What do you think of them? Cozy or constricting? Apparently, the fresher way to wear them is with wider neck like this (or this less expensive version). So if you’re somewhere that feels like fall, wear one for me this weekend and pick up a bouquet of cabbage roses.
