Can I Eat That? (& my top 5 Cookbooks for Kids)

Can I Eat That?

A playful approach to kids’ sometimes serious food questions, Can I Eat That? looks adorable!

Questions like “Do chicken have fingers?” and “Do eggs grow on eggplants?”are answered along with spreads full of word play: “Bacon, Bacoff? Ketchup, Ketchdown? Raisin, Raisout?” It reminds me of the kind of conversation we routinely have at our table.

Of course the best way to answer the “Can I Eat That?”-question is to get into the kitchen together. Here are the top five cookbooks I’m most interested in cracking open with the kids.

10 Minute Messy Waves

IMG_0096

Every time I run into my friend Vanessa, she looks amazing. Her bright, friendly smile has a lot to do with it, of course, but I wanted to know how she does her hair. Vanessa writes a fashion and lifestyle blogBabesicle, and I asked her if she’d be willing to contribute some style and beauty content—starting with a visit to the salon so the hairdresser could explain to me how to get those messy waves just right. She assured me that no professional experience is required and promised to make a tutorial her first post. Thank you, Vanessa!

Beachy, cool girl waves never stop looking fresh, regardless of whether you’re beachside in the midst of summer or land-locked in the dead of winter. They have an unfussy, undone quality since they’re loose and textured, and lend a pretty, yet slightly gritty vibe to any outfit. And they only take ten minutes!

Cool girl waves have become the go-to look for lob (long bob) cuts like mine (although mine’s a super lob as it’s a bit grown-out). It’s easily my favorite style to wear and it’s sooo quick and easy! I kind of can’t believe how quick it is every time I do it. It’s really just three steps, plus setting/texturizing with some product, and then you’re done! Here’s how…

Big news about a little A-Frame

AFrame Cabin Tahoe-Hither and Thither-1

We’ve been pinching ourselves over here a lot lately. There’s been something big in the works and, after signing the closing papers this weekend, I feel like I can finally share it: our family bought a cabin! With my parents, Aron and I found a place in Lake Tahoe where we hope to make memories for years and years to come.

They tell you not to let yourself get emotionally attached to a place before it’s yours, but it’s been hard not to. I would find myself thinking about all of the possible traditions we could establish and the ritual summer vacations we could spend there, our kids no doubt recounting them fondly whenever they pulled out a jigsaw puzzle or jumped into a cold lake as adults.

We took the kids to see it for the first time on Saturday morning and it was pretty amazing just to watch them dart around the trees, looking under pinecones, and making snowballs. Aron and I measured and made floor plans and then drove back home to sign the papers. The next morning we got up early and went to the Alameda Flea—excited by the prospect of finding something special for the cabin to make it feel like our home.

Actually, we’re hoping to move fairly quickly on the furnishing and decorating—we plan to rent it out this summer whenever we’re not there—so hopefully I’ll have more pictures and updates to share soon!

Update: Here’s the listing on AirBnB. More photos on IG at #twopinesTahoe

P.S. A winter edition of 5 Things: Lake Tahoe, and three other Tahoe travel posts: a kid-free weekend in the shoulder season, a pre-baby getaway, and a weekend with friends.
