Rain Boot(ie)s

I passed a girl wearing a pair of Loeffler Randall

rain booties the other day and they looked so chic! You couldn’t even tell at first that they were rubber!

They seem like a much more practical option than Hunter Wellies which often aren’t: first, it’s too warm (today’s forecast calls for rain and 78 degrees); and, more often than not, there’s a 50/50 chance that it actually won’t rain when the weatherman says it will. It stinks (um, literally?) to walk around in rubber boots, lugging an umbrella once the skies have cleared. Those who work in an office will often wear their boots to work and then swap them for the heels under their desks (or the flats rolled up in their purses), but what about on the weekends?

Recently I traded in my tall wellies for the all-black Bean boots below and I’m so much happier to walk around in them for hours if I’m far away from home and the sun breaks out. They’d also be much easier to pack for a rainy destination (like London, lately, I’ve heard lamented).

Here are some other good rain boot(ie) options for spring–or travel…

And Hunter’s Brixen Boot

could stand in for Doc Marten’s with jeans–or with a floral dress, a la Angela Chase or Alicia Silverstone circa Clueless. “The dream of the 90s is alive…”

Scenes from the Weekend

We had lots to celebrate this past weekend–our fifth wedding anniversary and my first mother’s day! (And we celebrated our own mothers and my dad’s birthday in spirit!) These are some of my favorite photos.

Taking a ride through the West Village and up the Hudson river on a bicycle-built-for-two. (We pretended the skywriting was in our honor!)

Laughing as Hudson finally got the nerve to say hello to the very loud vacuum. (One day we will have a real, full-size vacuum, by the way, and I never thought I’d be so excited at such a prospect.)

Taking baby steps. And seeing the playground slowly fill with fathers on mother’s day weekend.

Champagne and “wedding cake” for watching our ceremony and first dance (and for savoring all weekend).

Blushing while our neighbors took our five-year-photo and dinner downtown.

Mother’s day madness at all the street vendors Saturday night.

Being surprised with a very generous present at the most beautiful Apple store.

Picnicking (and sleeping) in Central Park.

Watching Hudson play with the baby from the next blanket over and discovering they were born on the very same day!

Except for my spilling a mother’s day latte all over our white couch first thing Sunday morning, it was a weekend full of good surprises. Like some first steps–eek! We caught a few on video…

Gasoline Alley

Between anniversaries, mother’s day, and gorgeous weather, it was a stellar weekend. I’ll probably gather some photos to share soon. In the meantime, here are some shots of a new favorite coffee stop. We’re getting a slow start this Monday morning and thinking about starting on some of those projects that got set aside the past few days, so coffee is definitely on my mind.

Gasoline Alley serves up really delicious Intelligentsia coffee drinks and decadent, pillowy doughnuts (from Dough in Brooklyn), and the little space–on that little triangular island between Lafayette and Mulberry that borders Bleeker and Houston–always has the most beautiful light! I’ve been working my way through the pastry case during stops en route to the Mulberry Street Library. (I love taking Hudson to their weekly storytime! And even more so, now.)

It’s always good to know how close you are to a truly good espresso drink, right?
