Aren’t these amazing? Lauren DiCioccio embroiders common objects that are fragile or becoming obsolete. (Shhh… don’t tell The New York Times she said so.)
In her words, she uses “tedious handiwork and obsessive care” in an effort to “provoke a pang of nostalgia for the familiar physicality of these objects.” Her series called Sewnnews, in which she encases the newspaper in muslin and selects a powerful image to embroider, is my favorite–particularly this image of Big Brown (Don’t the tangled threads perfectly capture the sense of movement?)–but her embroidered plastic bags and 35mm slides are also incredible. I would love to see them all up-close.
P.S. Our friends recently visited Kentucky and paid a visit to the horse farm where Big Brown resides and came back with some beautiful photos. Horses in general fit in the category of “love to see up-close.”
