Mouth: For the (Indie) Foodie

Mouth Big Cheese Package

A final gift category: food. What’s the line? The way to one’s heart…

There’s a company called Mouth that specializes in discovering the most delicious and interesting indie food products—for the most part all handmade and small-batch.

Considering themselves editors, they started a few years back, combing through New York City’s best artisans and its local farms for sources (so much of the site holds a nostalgia factor for me), but these are items that anyone anywhere would love to bring home to liven up his pantry.

And because we’re basically in the final hours for ordering online and guaranteeing delivery before Christmas, Mouth could be a game-changer.

For example, instead of that large popcorn tin (with only 3 kinds that you can never finish before most of it goes stale), they’ll send bags (and bags) of popped corn in a popcorn tasting selection with flavors like spicy almond, savory masala, white truffle, or sweet bacon caramel.

Cheeseboard

For the cheese lover (or simply that night’s cocktail party host), the one pictured—The Big Cheese—would make pulling together an awesome cheeseboard as easy as opening a box.

(For my part, you could pair almost anything with that washed-rind, mini-wheel of Vermont creamery goat cheese and I’d be happy.)

Here are a few other gift sets that caught my eye:

A Holiday Cocktail Trio that Aron would love: pre-mixed, barrel-aged twists on classic cocktails like a Sazerac or a Manhattan from Fluid Dynamics, an indie distiller.

E.V.O.O: Exceptional Vinegars & Outstanding Oils. A whole collection of oils for the serious cook, or something to divide up and gift individually because olive oil is apparently the new wine when it comes to host gifts (or so says Jenny).

Everything in Sundae Best looks amazing and I’d have a hard time giving this one away. But there are some serious ice cream fans in the family.

And it would extra sweet to gift a few of these items individually: Anything from Liddabit sweets (a favorite of ours since the brand debuted at the Brooklyn Flea). Or Honey Lavender Shortbread Cookies by Whimsy and Spice (helmed by my friend Jenna Park and her husband). Red pepper jelly (because pepper jelly was the first thing Aron and I made together one year as Christmas gifts to give), or grown-up pop tarts (because hello salted caramel apple).

If you have any last-minute shopping left to do, Mouth is giving 15% off to readers with the code HITHER15.

Bon appetit!
