A Straight Blade

When I first moved to New York, I would get my hair cut anywhere I could–this shop, that salon, Ashley’s bathtub “chair”…  Now, even if my schedule can still be brutal, I can actually stay awake for the entire haircut–which is perhaps why I’ve become more selective about where to go. And I’ve discovered there are a few shops where the art of the classic barber-shop shave is being revived. In the back of the Freemans Sporting Club (where custom suits and your great-grandfather’s knapsack might be found on sale) is a barber shop where rock music mixes with minty balm and tea tree oil–and where shaves are performed on vintage chairs with a straight blade. It’s going to be hard for me to go back to anything else.
(Photos are frowned upon, but I may have snuck some with my iphone on my last visit.)
